About the role

Ballarat Lawyers is seeking a Family Lawyer with 2+ years' post-admission experience (PAE) to join our growing legal team. This is a full-time position based in our Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh offices. In this role, you will provide expert legal advice and representation to clients navigating complex family law matters. You will play a crucial part in supporting our clients through significant life transitions, whilst contributing to the reputation and success of Ballarat Lawyers as a trusted family law practice.

Key responsibilities

  • Providing comprehensive legal advice to clients on family law matters, including divorce, property division, parenting arrangements and custody disputes

  • Preparing and filing legal documents, including applications, affidavits and court submissions

  • Conducting client interviews and gathering relevant information to build strong cases

  • Negotiating settlements and agreements with opposing parties and their legal representatives

  • Representing clients in mediation, conciliation and court proceedings

  • Maintaining accurate case files and ensuring compliance with legal and ethical obligations

  • Communicating regularly with clients to provide updates on case progress and legal strategy

  • Conducting legal research on relevant family law precedents and legislation

  • Contributing to the development of firm practices and procedures to enhance service delivery

What we're looking for

  • A minimum of 2 years' post-admission experience in family law practice

  • Current practising certificate as a lawyer in Victoria or willingness to obtain one

  • Strong knowledge of the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth) and related legislation

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to clients

  • Proven ability to manage multiple cases effectively and meet strict deadlines

  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence when working with clients in distress

  • Competent legal research and writing abilities

  • Proficiency with legal case management software and Microsoft Office applications

  • Experience with negotiation and dispute resolution, including alternative dispute resolution methods

  • A commitment to maintaining professional ethics and client confidentiality

  • Preferred: Experience with property division disputes, parenting matters or collaborative family law practice
